Writing Sample

(The following is a writing sample from an independent project of mine using the King's Bounty Editor. Here, you have just rescued an old wizard from a horde of monsters in his tower. He then leads you to the top of his tower to show you something important.)

(While you continue peering into the scope, the wizard adjusts the focus.
The image becomes clearer.  Instead of a comet you now faintly see a dragon flying in the heavens.)

Player: Wait! I see it now!  It's a dragon!

Arcanus:  Yes, a great dragon. And in a matter of weeks, if we are not prepared, our doom.
That is the Great Dragon, Gezegen, Scourge of humanity. Every 355 years it comes to sow utter destruction! Now it comes again, and this time it is heading for this area!
Every 355 years the dragon, Gezegen, comes with an army of evil beings, its only goal to destroy humanity.  Only it has never succeeded.
It has been known to bring droughts, raze cities to the ground, turn proud forests into deserts, but always Gezegen has been defeated. The last time he was defeated it was by St. Athanasius, out in the east.  Unfortunately, it had already nearly destroyed the entire region.      Defeated, the dragon once more took to the heavens, traveling the higher spheres to gather its strength, rebuild its army, and return stronger than ever to destroy the world.
I have learned many things in my years of study. I was able to predict this coming disaster over thirty years ago! I worked to prepare for it ever since. I too could have accomplished the great feat that St. Athanasius had, but I was set back.

Player: How were you set back?

Arcanus: You see, my child, one night a few weeks ago, my apprentice, Mundus, unleashed that horde of monsters and made off with the devices I had devoted my life to crafting.
With my power, surviving those week's was a trivial task, but without my weapons I was yet unable to fight the monsters off. Had they been with me, I would have obliterated those fiends in a split-second!
But my works have been taken from me, and without them I will not be able to face the dragon.

Player: What must we do, then?

Arcanus: Please, my child, the fate of this land--and perhaps the world--rests in your hands. Find my apprentice, Mundus, and get my magical weapons back from him. With these marvels, designed by my own genius and crafted by my own hands, I can then stand to face the dragon Gezegen and take my place in history as one of its greatest heroes.

Player: I will not fail!

Mundus: What do you want?

Player: I am here to demand the return of Arcanus's tools, which you stole!

Gnostikos: Those weapons were given to me by Mundus. And with good reason.

Player: But he stole them!

Gnostikos: No matter, they are mine now and I will not part with them. Their use to me will be invaluable.

Player: You must return them! Arcanus needs them to save us from a calamity that is coming!

Gnostikos: Fool! Do you not think the dead know about the coming of the dragon? The dead have revealed much to me. I know about Gezegen, Scourge of Humanity, and its power.
That old man could not hope to defeat such a monster! He has no idea of the beast's majestic power!

Player: But he can unlock the weapons' full power!

Mundus: Even with all their powers unlocked, it would still be hopeless! That crazy sorceror thought of himself as a new Athanasius, thinking he would defeat the dragon and become some glorious hero. His self-centered vision was a risk to us all if anything!
If he had his way, he would have faced the dragon alone, just to get incinerated, leaving everyone else without a hope.
While I was still working under that old idiot, my new master told me of a far better use for these devices. And now we will be able to put them to some real use!

Player: And what exactly is your plan?

Gnostikos: Death is inevitable. All will perish in the fires of Gezegen. Only when my loyal apprentice and I fall, we will rise up again in new forms. Not as mindless thralls, but fully equipped with our own will and intellect!
The shackles of our humanity will be cast off; the dragon will accept us under our new forms.
We alone shall survive. It does not matter to us what it costs.

Player: I cannot let you do this. Now give back his tools!

Gnostikos: You have a very strong will. Perhaps you too would like to join us, and be spared?
If you knew what death contained as well as I do, you would be rightfully afraid to face it. It would be wise to accept this generous offer.

Player: I don't know what spirits you have been talking to, but we will fight the dragon, and those stolen devices are needed for it!
